No Service' on iPhone bought from another country, what to do?

A friend of mine bought an iPhone 4 (not 4s) in France when she was there, then when she got back to Sweden she got her self a SIM card from a Swedish carrier called 3 (tre). Problem is, it says there's no service! Is this because the phone is somehow locked to another carrier in France in some weird way or is it since it's bought in France it isn't compatible with Swedish carriers? I really want to know what is wrong! Please help!

Btw current iOS version is 5.1.1 and modem firmware is 04.12.01

  • Turn iPhone to iPod in another country? I'm going on a month long trip to Japan and would like to bring along my iPhone 4 to take pictures with, listen to music, etc. I'm NOT TRYING TO USE IT AS A PHONE TO TALK OR TEXT OR USE DATA. I don't have international services. So I figure I can take out the SIM card and it will be an iPod touch with no services, right? My problem is that I don't want to come home to a big fat surprise bill.
