How to transfer music from laptop to iPhone?

So today I just downloaded music from my friend's Macbook Air because she has a bunch of cool music, and because I wanted to sync her music to my iPhone (it's an iPhone 5s), it removed all my old music and replaced them with her music. I thought I could just re-download all my old music from my laptop (a Lenovo ThinkPad) on iTunes back to my phone but later when I tried to, it wouldn't work.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how I could get my old music back onto my phone?
