Problems updating software on iPhone?
I recently attempted to update the software on my iPhone from IOS 5.0 to 5.1. However, after iTunes backed up my phone and extracted the old software, it forcefully ejected my phone from the program. When I attempt to turn the phone, it tells me to plug it into iTunes, as there's currently no software on the phone, but iTunes no longer recognizes the phone as a device. Any suggestions on how I could put the software back on my phone so I can use it without having to go to the Apple store?
Follow the steps int he link and get it out of recovery mode(i-tunes logo). Then try again. If same result then download the software from the second link for your phone and try again but this time hold shift and then click on restore button in i-tunes and select the software you downloaded. Hopefully it works then.
Fortunately, iTunes backs up everything before its starts an IOS update; it didn't use to be that way.
Essentially what's happened is that it didn't complete the IOS update, and it's probably stuck in Recovery mode. That's why iTunes doesn't recognize the phone, and you probably have a white Apple logo on your screen as well (though not always).
This unfortunately isn't an uncommon occurrence; I had to deal with it, as well as other iPhone 4's and 4S's I'm responsible for. So don't feel like you're being singled out; Apple wants all of us to feel screwed.
Anyway, this procedure at Apple Support is what you need to do to get it back to its original baseline configuration (as when you first got it). Once that's completed and it updates the IOS, you can do a Restore from iTunes to recover all of your content.

- Would updating the software on my iPhone (4s) delete everything off it? So I just got a notification to my phone that said new software update. I clicked close because I didn't know wheather it would delete everything off my phone. But if I do update my software, will everything be deleted off of it?
- Will updating my iPhone software use more space? I currently run on 7.0.4 and I could be running 8.4. I missed a few updates because I only use my phone for music. I have every megabyte devoted to music and I don't really see the point in downloading more software if it is going to take up valuable space on my phone. Would updating my software actually use more space, or would the new updates cause the software to become more compact? Some people tell me that the new software is significantly smaller but I seriously doubt it.
- Will updating my iPhone's software delete purchased apps and songs? I'm going to update my iPhone's 6.1.4 software to ios 7 when it is released in a few days. Some of my apps aren't available in the App Store anymore so will the update delete these apps off my phone?
- Will updating my iPhone apps affect my phone speed as how updating the Operating System (OS) will? Currently I'm using the iPhone 5s on iOS 8.3 I know if I were to update my phone to the latest OS I may notice some slowdown on my phone's performance, since it may not have the "muscle" to handle certain functions. Many apps now are optimised for iOS 9 and/or the 6th generation phones. Will my 5s' speed performance slow down if I update my apps? Will the app's performance slow down?
