I would go with the J7 but android is my preference,
I would be unlike to get the iPhone 7 because I like the stared earbud jack on most phones including the iPhone SE and the iPhone 6s.
My wife is happy with her iPhone 6 except that it is only unlocked and the 6s, SE, and 7 iPhones are available in SIM-fee so can be used with both the system that Sprint and Verizon use and the system that AT&T, Cricket, and T-Mobile use.
You could wait and see if the iPhone 8 really does use the current industry standard USB-C port if you don't need a new phone yet.
SE is small and can be paid off faster iPhone 7 should be most advanced except of for the earbud jack
