Should I have iMessage turned on or off?

I just got an iPhone 5c, I've never had a smartphone before. I just recently turned my iMessage ON as well as still keeping SMS ON. I'm a little confused and concerned. My boyfriend doesn't have an iPhone so will he still receive my texts since I have them both on? Is it better to have iMessage on or off? I have Sprint which I believe has unlimited data… Sorry I'm bad at this smartphone life lol.

yes. Sms still works as per normal when imessage is activated for all other contacts

I'm no longer an iPhone user, however, as far as I can remember, iMessage is simply an alternate text message application for sending messages to other Apple users, It uses both Wi-Fi and 3G/4G (mobile data) to send them, so assuming you are correct in thinking you have unlimited data, there would be no harm at all in leaving iMessage on.

If its not causing any problems or extra cost or runs your battery down then leave it on, if you don't use it then switch it off. Try switching it off for a week or so if your not sure.

  • Will i still receive texts if I turned my iMessage off? I used up all my data this month, and I only can use iMessage in a Wi-Fi area now. So when I'm at work or school and don't get Wi-Fi, will i still get a text from someone who has an iPhone? It would just show up in green and be a regular text, right? Or would I not get it at all?
