Should we impose sin taxes on recreational items like TV's, iPhones, laptops, etc?

Anti-smoking advocates want to tax cigarettes for their costs to society. Okay. How about all these items? They're often mass-produced using a lot of petroleum-based chemicals and plastics, they are designed to break easily and be obsolete quickly, they use a lot of resources, they lower workplace productivity, and so on.

Rampant consumerism is doing way more damage to society as a whole than tobacco is. Should we impose a sin tax on this dangerous behavior?

We should. And we should impose a sin tax on the gays.

CA already has them on some of the items you just mentioned.

LOL No, people are free to spend their HARD EARNED MONEY any way they like. There's nothing wrong with buying extravagant things, like a Ferrari for example, if you are spending you're own hard earned money. What's up with all the jealous haters always trying to steal from the wealthy? They earned their money, maybe you should do the same & stop being jealous of other people's wealth.

Why should everyone be penalized just because of a few irresponsible people who don't know how to live within their means & go in to debt? You can't always (and shouldn't always) force people to be responsible. So let them live with the consequences of their poor choices & leave everyone else, who is responsible, alone with to deal with their own business

Taking on consumer debt is not necessarily a bad thing as long as you are responsible & have a solid plan to pay it off… Like a job that can afford you to service your debt. It's common sense.
