Switching iphones, how do I keep my number?

We recently added a line to our phone plan for my son. I would like to give him my phone to use until I feel he is ready for an upgrade. How do we switch but keep our own numbers? I could go to verizon but if I don't have to take the trip out I'd rather not.

You need to take your SIM card out of the old phone and put it in the new phone when you get it-assuming the SIM card fits. They get smaller as years and models go by. You then need to put in a new sim card in his 'new' phone and your old sim card in your new phone to set up. But you'll get the right sized cards when you go pick out a new phone for yourself anyway. Most cell phone allow your to keep your old number free of charge bus there might be some companies that won't allow that. If your switching carriers it maybe more difficult. If your just upgrading to the a new phone on the sme plan there's nothing you need to do.

If your contacts are stored in the SIM card, you just need to put the SIM card on your new phone, that's all. If your contracts are stored in the phone storage, you can use a 3rd party software like this Phone to Phone transfer, it can help you copy the contacts from your old phone to the new one.
