Tracking an iPhone through Wi-Fi?

So… My phone kinda got stolen today (iPhone 5s) and I think whoever stole it turned it onto airplane mode so I can't track it… And I was wondering if I would be able to track them/erase my phone/lock my phone once it connected to Wi-Fi or if it has to be through "cellular service"

You won't have much luck. Once they factory reset it and take out the sim card you are screwed. The police could track it if they really wanted but the average person can't. They won't want to waste their time with a stolen phone

I think that you can call your provider and they can send a signal to disable the device. If they do connect to Wi-Fi you can disable it yourself.

If you installed "Find my iPhone" app on the iPhone 5s and enable this settings, you are likely able to track down where about the location if the Wi-Fi is activated. You could also set to display messages on lock screen to return it and wipe out all data remotely and iPhone permanently becomes a "dead phone" and not be able to be used by anyone unless sign in back with apple iCloud ID.

Again all these needs the Find my iPhone app and iCloud account. If you didn't set these two up before then I'm afraid there's not much you could do now… Sorry

Go into icloud and put in lost mode. If you were to lazy to turn on find my iphone, then consider it gone and just move on.

If it does not work, it is better for you to contact your service provider and see if they can help. To prevent your new idevice from being stolen or lost in the future, I suggest you apply some free anti-theft apps like iLostFinder ( http://ikeymonitor.com/free-apps ) except set up Find My iPhone/iPad/iPod in iCloud on the device. It will take pics of the thief or finder when she/he tries to open your device with a wrong pass and then send the pics to your email etc. Hope it helps.

I think tracking an i phone through Wi-Fi is not possible all the times. So using imei numbers to track an i phone is a better idea
