Traveling by train for the first time in the UK?

I 'm traveling to Manchester soon, will be staying for a couple of days then will head to London, i'am planning on taking the train from manchester to london, the only problem here is that i don't understand the whole "platform" "district line" etc.

is there a direct train that can take me to where i want to go? Or at least an app for iPhone that explains in detail on where to go and what train to take?

Manchester to London is an overland rail trip. The platform is just the place where you stand on to get in the train. The District Line is one of London's Underground railway routes, as any UK diary will usually show you.

When you arrive at Euston Station, you will need to follow the signs to the Underground to continue on with your journey. To see which lines and any changes, see the TFL journey planner (start the journey at Euston and put your final destination in the other box).
