Update to OSX Mountain Lion?
Hi! So I got my hands on an iPhone 5 recently and I wanted to back it up and add songs so I plugged it into my Mac. Then it said that my iTunes version was too old and to update, i need to update the OSX since I'm currently running on 10.5.8. I'm considering buying Mountain Lion but will it DELETE MY FILES? Read some stuff online about "backing it up"? How do you do that exactly, without iCloud?
It won't delete your files, but you need to be running Snow Loeopard or Lion before updating to Mountain Lion.
If you don't have either, you can search YouTube for a tutorial to get Snow Leopard for free then you can buy Mountain Lion from the AppStore
ICloud is a website to store files. Buy a thumb drive at Wal-Mart for $15 or at Amazon for $10 to backup important stuff… And yesterday would be the best time to start. Computer glitches can't be predicted.
You FORGOT TO SAY WHAT COMPUTER. Not all Macs can use OS 10.8.
To install OS 10.8 without OS 10.6.8 or later already there, you have two options…
-- Erase before install,
-- Use Disk Utility to create a new partition and install OS 10.8 there, thus making a dual-boot system. Comes in handy for running old apps.
To buy OS 10.8, you must be using any Mac (not necessarily this one) that is running OS 10.6.6 or later (App Store comes with OS 10.6.6). Link below shows how to make a bootable drive or DVD to install.
Yes, you do need to buy (not steal, like the other answer says--Vietnamese piracy site mentioned on Youtube) an OS 10.6 DVD if you want to upgrade the existing system and then upgrade that to OS 10.8. That would avoid the two options I mentioned above.
Unfortunately, your question is way too vague:
You need to talk to Apple directly to ensure that your specific PC's Model Number is even Upgradable to Mountain Lion. Just call 1-800-myApple, and they can answer this for you, once they know which version of OS X you have running on it.
And, OS X's built-in Time Machine (and any external USB hard drive) is the best Back Up App I have ever used. It does automatic Backups hourly! Watch this great video for more info
- Will updating to Mac Osx 10.6.8 Erase Data? My iphone's running ios 6 and it got messed up so i wanted to restore it, itunes says it needs to be updated so when i downloaded itunes 7.1 it said mac needs to be updated. Do i have to install the mac osx update? Will it erase my data? ( i don't have a time machine or a back up)
- Remove DRM from itunes (Mac OSX Snow Leopard)? I moved from an Iphone to a galaxy nexus. Almost everything I bought on Itunes refuses to transfer due to DRM. I've tried Requiem to no success, FairPlay didn't work either. I don't have a ton of CDs sitting around so is there another way to remove this? I also do not want to spend $35 on some of this software that allows a "free trial" for songs less than 3 minutes long. Please Help. Apple is a cruel cult that is trying to suck me back in
- OS X Mountain Lion and the IPhone 5? Do I need OS X mountain lion installed on our mac before we can sync our iphone 5 with iTunes? Everytime we plug it in it says we need to upgrade, but our itunes says it is updated to 10.6.3 and is up to date.
- My OS X mountain lion Was drop. Is my Mac ruined? I accidentally drop my Mac laptop… I'm afraid of opening it… Maybe it does not function… I'm new here in Canada and don't know we're the apple store here… I'm just using my cousin iPhone 5 because he doesn't have a Mac. My mother will scold me if my Mac is broken or else she will not buy me iPad. So please tell me what to do. I want iPad…
