Upgrading to IOS 6 on an AT&T iphone that is no longer in service?

Earlier today, I did an early termination on my AT&T contract. I'm now on Virgin mobile with a new phone but the same number. I tried updating my iphone that is from AT&T to the new IOS 6 software, and it says the phone can't be updated because there's no network service. It doesn't make sense though because some ipads don't have a network service and neither do itouchs. Why do iphones need a network service to be upgraded? Is there any way to upgrade my iphone to the IOS 6?

You need network service because it has to go on the Internet and download it from there. If you want to upgrade to iOS 6 you can connect to your home Wi-Fi network and then try upgrading or go on iTunes and upgrade from there.

  • Will upgrading from iOS 5 to iOS 6 delete ANY data? I want to upgrade my iPhone 4 from iOS 5 to iOS 6 DIRECTLY FROM THE iPHONE using the software update option in Settings >> General.   • Upgrading from iOS 5 to iOS 7.1.1? Can I upgrade to iOS 7.1.1 even if iOS 7.1.2 is available? I've downloaded the ipsw for the former and I hate to redownload.
