Was the Iphone the first smart phone?

I'm writing an essay and was wondering if the Iphone was the first "Smart phone" invented

It depends on your definition of "smartphone" - though most who know the history will say that iPhone was not first…

No it wasn't. It was probably the one that really ushered them in, but was not the 1st. Apple in fact compared it to 3 of the popular ones at the time.

I phone was not the first smart phone. The first smartphone was designed by IBM in 1992 and was called Simon. It was a hand held, touch screen cellular phone with a PDA designed and engineered by International Business Machine. Hope this helped.

The first smart phone was invented by Andrew Graham Bell (brother of Alexander Graham Bell, and uncle to 'baby bell') in 1872. It was not, however, a commercial success primarily because their was nobody to call or text. Consequently, Andrew spent the rest of his life developing apps for himself while his brother ran copper wires all over the world. This is what inspired Steve Jobs.
