What are my carrier options for an unlocked iPhone 4S or 5?
I'm looking to get an iPhone 4S, or preferably, 5 (once the unlocked ones are available in a few weeks), but since I'm not sure I'll be in America past next May, I'd like to get the unlocked version so I can have the option of using it abroad.
However, I need help figuring out which carrier I can use, contract-free, in the meantime. I barely need any minutes, but I want unlimited texts - unlimited data would be nice too.

The only unlocked version of the iPhone 4S or 5 is on AT&T (GSM). GSM is the international standard for cell phone technology, so it works practically everywhere. If you want an unlocked one on Verizon or Sprint (CDMA), you can purchase one used online. But note the CDMA technology doesn't work in Europe and most other countries. The GSM unlocked iPhone 5 is $649, while the 4S is $549.
- What are my options when wanting to use an iPhone in the USA for 3 months? I'm spending the summer in the US, I can't really find a decent plan that I could use my phone over there. I'd mostly need it for calling home in the UK as well as contacting people in the us and maybe some light google mapping - I'd try to keep that to a minimal/ use Wi-Fi spots. In the UK I pay £30 a month for unlimited texts, 660 minutes and 1gb of internet, any similar deals for roughly the same price?
- What are my options to carrier unlock an iPhone 4s I bought off of eBay? I recently purchased an iPhone 4s off of eBay and it's still carrier locked. Is there a cheap/free way to carrier unlock it? It's currently jailbroken and it used to be on AT&T. I plan on switching it to MetroPCS. I only have the MetroPCS SIM card and it says I have signal but I can't make calls, texts, use the web. I'm not a AT&T customer and have no way of becoming one. I really need help. Any suggestions?

I have seen youtube videos and heard rumors of the apple store replacing for $229. Would anyone else have some cost effective options or know exactly how to go about getting this fixed in the US?
