What can I buy to play my iphone in my car?

My car does not have a tape player or an audio input. All I have is a cigarette lighter and I want to get something that will connect and I would be able to play my iPhone while I'm driving

There are a few different routes you can take on this one.

There are radio frequency adapters that will "plug in" using FM radio frequencies. What essentially happens is that the transmitter taps into your receiver and will transfer the radio waves to correspond with your FM frequency.

This is the cheap method, but the quality of it is also cheap. You will frequently notice static throughout different songs depending on your location and it can become quite annoying.

A good frequency transmitter will run you about $50-$75 and they do not always perform well.

A more expensive, but much better and practical approach to this problem is to replace your cars stereo (head unit).

You will want to buy a head unit that allows for iPod integration and iPod interfacing. They sell these at all car audio outlets and even have them available at Wal Marts.

These units will run you anywhere from $50.00 - $1, 000 depending on the brand, wattage, quality, and output. If you're only looking for iPod integration, than a simple $50 head unit should suit you just fine, however, I would recommend getting one that also offers high outputs because it will increase the overall performance of your audio experience.

With this purchase you will also have to buy an in-dash mounting kit. ($20-$40) This is because the aftermarket stereos are not cut perfectly to accommodate the surrounding space of your original, (factory) stereo.

You will also need to buy a wiring harness ($15-$25) because the plug for your car is designed to feed the wiring to your factory radio, and not an aftermarket one.

Finally, you will either have to find someone to install it for you, install it yourself, or pay a car audio store to install in for you. This is usually around $75.00, but it is not hard to install at all. You just have to undo a few screws and then match color coded wires to their respective placeholders.

  • What can I use to play music to car from iphone? My friend and I want to play music in her car from our iPhones. The car doesn't have a car charging port, an aux port, or a cassette slot. Only a cigarette lighter thing and cd slot. Is there a way to play music from our phones to her car?
  • Looking for something I can play my music from my iPhone 6s in my car? I have a pretty old car so I can't use Bluetooth etc to play music from my phone in my car but I'm looking for some kind of transmitter (not sure if this is the name) so I can play music in my car from my phone, preferably one where I can skip through music etc using the car not the phone if they exist (my sister has one which connects at 88.7 but she can only skip music through her phone, not by the car)
  • How to charge my iPhone in my car without an actual car charger? I'm going on a long road trip. Since the iPhone battery doesn't usually last long, i was wondering if there's another way to charge my phone without a car charger. Because my lighter doesn't work due to a broke fuse in my fuse box… Anyway- is there any alternative to keeping my phone charged?
  • Is there a car jack to plug into my iPhone to listen to music in the car? So I have been wanting to listen to music through my iPhone in the car for awhile now since burning CDs is not something I specialize in. Is there a car jack for this so that I can play music over the stereo system? I have a 2004 Volvo XC90 if it helps. -Thanks!
