What do I need to know about being visually disabled and taxes?
My name is Andrew West. I was born with a rare genetic eye condition. I'm now 23 and have lost my left eye after multiple surgeries, and I'm slightly limited in my right eye. (Using an iPhone 5s and it is freaking hard to read what I'm typing, even with glasses.) Anyways, I recently got a job and was curious what I'll need to know about when it comes to taxes. My parents have no idea and I can't afford to pay anyone to teach me, and as far as taxes go, I don't know what to look up.
I get paid $10 an hour
10 hour days (flexible shift) Mon-Thur
I get paid bi-weekly
I receive SSI and Foodstamps
I also have Medicare.
So what am I going to have to know about being disabled and taxes?
You need to report your income to SSI.
There's a spot on the form to check if you are disabled.
How do you have SSI and medicare? SSI comes with medicaid?
If you are on SSI for blindness, you are allowed more income, but from what you describe you do NOT meet the definition of disability due to blindness-it needs to severely affected both eyes, you say you are only slightly limited in your better eye.
you need to find out what you are on SSI for.
Next year, when you filing taxes, just use software like Turbo Tax. I don't recommend HR block, they had a lot of problems a couple years ago.
you also need to report the income to food stamps.
See if there's an IRS-trained free tax preparation program in your state and in your area. The income limits for participating in these programs are pretty generous.
Don't try to use any of the fill-in-your own taxes software programs. Get people who were trained and will do it for completely free. They are required to keep your personal information secure and confidential because they are trained by the IRS to help people with limited income.
I've used one of these help programs because of my disabilities--including learning disabilites with math, and I've never had a problem with timely filling. I've always been pleased.
