What do musicians and bands do for a living?
They can't be making music for a living especially indie ones. What jobs do they do?
Some - quite a few - actually do make a living out of music. Unfortunately fewer are able to due to the misconception that music should be free. You can see this in Kevin's answer. Very, very few ever become rich. Most are only "working musicians" doing things like recording for TV and movie soundtracks and in the orchestras of Broadway style shows.
There are rock band type musicians who are in the "A Band" category. They play the top bars and venues doing cover tunes. They get several thousand per gig and must split it up between their crew and musicians. They only play a few nights per week. It's not an easy life. A lot of the original Indie bands work like this, living out of buses. It was easier in the day when you could actually record and sell vinyl albums or CDs and make a decent profit (another dirty word among the iPhone crowd) rather than give your music away as mp3 files on the net. Many of the classic rock bands started out this way before they were discovered by major labels.
But yes, many small time, "weekend warrior" bands have day jobs of every description.
Just as an example here are the day jobs of some of the musicians of the bands I worked sound for:
Music Teacher in a public school (several)
Gym teacher
Telecommunications executive
Appliance salesman
Pizzeria owner
Auto mechanic
Cabinet maker While waiting to be rich most play in small venues or open for more popular bands.

- What's your favorite artists/bands/songs? I'm tired of having the same old songs on my iPhone/iPod. What are your favorite artists/bands/songs? I like: Pop Electro-rock Pop rap Rap Pop punk Uh, I think that's about it. So please give me some good artists, bands, and/or songs please.
- What LTE bands will T-Mobile be using? I heard that T-Mobile will be upgrading their network to LTE speeds shortly, and that they will be using the same LTE band as AT&T (band 4).Is this true? Which iPhone model should I get to insure my iPhone will function properly on T-Mobile with the LTE speeds? People always say the Verizon one since it supports more bands, but this iPhone will only be on T-Mobile's network.
- What is the downside of living in the ghetto on welfare? Trayvon had been had him an iphone, ipad, ipod, MacBook Pro, high speed internet access, and he had a wad of cash on his person after the accident. Any white suburban kid would have exactly the same stuff, so I wonder how bad can being "poor" in America be?
- What apps can make living in New York easier? My sister is moving to New York in a few weeks. She has never been and is somewhat intimidated by the whole change. What can make the transition easier? Ipad or iphone apps are the things I'm actually looking for. Maps, restaurants, discounts, anything goes. Anything you think that will make life easier there?
