The Apple i in iPhone, iPad, iPad or iMac stands for internet or it could mean independent.
It's just a marketing scheme, and obviously it works. The "i" in the iDevices most likely means "I". Meaning that "it's mine, and belongs to me."
Well back in the day (1998) when the very first iMac came out and reintroduced the internet. Back then it was extremely complicated to set up an internet connection but apple created the iMac and found a much easier way to set up and internet connection.
