What exactly is cellular data? - 1

I'm so confused about my iPhone data. I just got an iPhone 4 and I got a message saying I'm almost above my data limit. But I'm not exactly sure why. So can someone tell me what data is and if I turn it off and use Wi-Fi am I still using data? Can I still be charged? Oh I never intentionally used Internet without Wi-Fi. That's mostly where I'm confused.

Cellular data is what you use outside Wi-Fi. It is pulled from cell towers. Wi-Fi will not affect your cellular data plan, because it is not pulled from the towers.

If your data is turned on, you are using data. Even if you have Wi-Fi on if your data is turned on, your data is being used. The only way to make sure that your phone is not using data is to turn it off. Keeping your data turned off will save your battery life, and not update apps all of the time. You will also need to turn it on to receive picture messages.

Cellphone data is the internet you use on your phone, it could be 3g, 4g, LTE, HSPA, Edge, etc…
Every time you enter FB, you use data, G you use data, use Safari you use data.
It have nothing to do with calls or SMS, MMS use data. If you use Wi-FI then you stop using data and it won't count. You'll be alright.

  • Why does my iphone use data over night when cellular data is turned off? Every night I turn off cellular data and leave the iPhone on and one day I wake up and check my data manager and see i have already used 25 MB please help!
  • When you have Wi-Fi and cellular data on at the same time, does it use cellular data? If I keep my cellular data on and also have my iPhone connected to Wi-Fi, will it use any of my cellular data?
  • What exactly does turning off Data Roaming do? Living in SK, Canada IPhone 4 under Sasktel. Okay so when I go to work located near the boarder occasionally I get a your now US roaming chargers messages. Does turning off data roaming remove all roaming charges like phone calls, messages, etc or just email and Internet like it says? I'd hate to be billed just because I'm too close. Just been turning off all network connections at work so far and data roaming is usually off anyway.
  • Taking out sim cards and cellular data on iPhone 4s? Currently I'm in a different country and do not want any unexpected charges to pop up on my bill when I return. My sim card is out but I still send emails and browse the internet using the local wi-fi from my location; since the sim card is out, I won't be charged? Also, what is cellular data? Like I said, I took out my sim card and data roaming is disabled but cellular data is turned on, I won't be charged for it being on since the sim card isn't inserted, correct?
