What happens if I unlock my Iphone 3g?

I'm under a 3 year contract with Telus right now, and it is almost over. I want to unlock the Iphone I bought through the plan and use it as a pay-as-you-go phone under a different provider. Will I be able to use it as pay-as-you-go?

Added (1). So I can use it as a pay-as-you-go?
