What is a 'piece of technology'?
My uni essay question for 'American Studies' is:
"Pick one piece of technology and show how it has influenced American development."
Would it be acceptable to write the essay about Apple. Inc, mainly focusing around the iPhone? That's considered a "piece of technology" and there's a lot to write about it surely, right?
The iPhone would be the "piece of technology" required by the topic, yes. Just make sure you're focusing on the device itself and not its creator.

Oddly, neither really is the iPhone, or any mobile phone.
The technology is actually mobile communication technology.
I can't see how focusing on a singular item (the iPhone) you can come up with the second requirement "how it has influenced American development". Focus on the mobile technology, not the product.
Piece of technology' means latest technology, such as old technology and modern technology
