What is the appropriate age for a kid to have an IPhone/Android?

Well I have an android phone (droid dna, it's great!) and i'm in high school. I would say that the appropriate age would be around 14-17 (18 and parents shouldn't pay for those kinds of things) overall. But the main thing i would consider is if the child is responsible enough to have one. For example, would he (or she) take care of it or do things like throw it or lend it out to everyone who wants it. Another thing to consider would be if the person will use it for more practical reasons (calendar, quick research, checking the homework) or time-wasting purposes (gaming, videos, etc.).

Just my personal recommendation. If you do get a smartphone, you should get an android phone. They are much more customizable. Also, there are cheap android phones if you're not willing to dish out the money (samsung gravity smart, kyocera rise). There are also high quality android phones (droid dna, htc one, samsung galaxy s3, samsung galaxy s4, nexus 4)

Whatever age they are when they get their first job, that is dependable and reliable, that's just my opinion though.

The appropriate age for any phone is when they can pay for it them self, but no earlier than 14.

Old enough to pay for it ENTIRELY on their own, including the cost of the data plan. Also, not in middle school at all. Only in high school if kid has proven general responsibility and trustworthiness.

When they're old enough to have a job and buy it for themselves. I don't have any problem with buying my kids a cell phone when they're old enough (and by that time, these data phones may be affordable, who knows) but I don't think we need to take out a second job, just so our kids can have the best and newest phone available.

Kid should have phone at 12 , because of safety and it you think they should buy there own you are saying buy your own safety.
