Do a Peter Gabriel on it (sledgehammer). Even if the phone appears to be completely dead, it's possible that the main board can still be powered up by a crafty person, and the data pulled out of its storage. If you literally smash the phone, the task becomes near- or completely impossible.

Don't forget that there are going to be sharp bits of glass, and perhaps chemical/incendiary discharge from the battery. A more environmentally friendly way to accomplish this would be to remove the display and batteries first (you can sell them!), but this is extremely difficult thanks to Apple's stylish no-fastener design.
