What is the cheapest way to use my iPhone while studying in France?

I will be studying in France from February through June. I have an iPhone 4s and I'm currently using at&t. I've heard there's a way to buy a pre-paid sim card? The main reason I would like a cell phone while abroad is to communicate with friends in France. I plan on using Skype to talk to anyone in the US.

Use imessege for cheap texts to friends/family who own a ipod/ipad/iphone (its free all around the world) use public Wi-Fi to skype/internet and get a cheap sim card with a international option on it its probably around 9 cents per text and 13 cents a minut for international calls

Considering the absolutely and unbelievably expensive plans available for you, using you IT&T phone outside of USA, consider this.

First, your idea of using skype is excellent. Go for that.

Putting a French card in your American iPhone is scary. You will have to "jailbreak" the phone and it may never return to its old status after you return home. Besides, the French SIM card has a different number, so all your friends in USA will have to call France to reach you.

Suggestion: Call AT&T and get a low cost plan for about $ 60.It gives you some calls and also SMSs to send/receive. Carry the phone. When a US friends calls your US number, your phone will ring in France. Don't talk, just promise to call back as soon as you have Wi-Fi access, using Skype.

Then, buy your self a really cheap prepaid phone in France. They sell for as little as € 10.00 plus the cost for prepaid calls. Then all your in-France calls, going and coming are cheap.

Most pre-paid plans in France will not allow you to call outside Europe - so you need Skype for that.
.

As far as I know, the cheapest pre-paid mobile calls in France are Ortel and Lebara. You can buy a sim card online, at their website or at many bar tabacs in Paris.

If you tend to make many calls and send lots of texts and use internet from time to time, then, the best would probably be to get a SFR pre-paid sim card and buy a 20€ card that allows illimited calls and texts during 1 month and 300Mo for internet. There are Sfr stores all around Paris.

Otherwise go to the Fnac store @ 74, avenue des Champs Elysées (because they've got multilingual staff) and ask about the different pre-paid offers, they sell sim cards for Orange, Sfr, Bouygues, Virgin etc.

Buy a prepaid sim card for calls in France, use SKYPE for the US.

  • Which camera should I bring? Studying abroad in London/Travelling Europe? I have these options: a DSLR Nikon camera, a Sony videocamera (small), or should I buy a digital camera? In addition, i'm bringing my iPhone 5s, which has pretty good quality as well. I'm just afraid I'll lose my DSLR, should I buy a digital camera or take the small videocamera? Suggestions? I will be studying for a semester in London and traveling to a few countries in Europe as well.
  • What is the cheapest way to use iphone (5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6s)? I need a new smart phone and I'm interested in using iphone(5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6s). I'm not interested in iphone 4 because I heard they got no support anymore. I seldom use call and web, say no more 20 minutes per month for calling, almost no chance to open web browser. (Basically I only use Wi-Fi.) Would you mind advising me what is the cheapest plan for me?
