What is the Screen Protector from the Otterbox Defender like?

In general, I really hate screen protectors because they make the touch screen less sensitive. (At least the previous one's I've used.) Plus they're very hard to apply, but I don't think I'd have that problem from Otterbox.
I'm getting an iPhone 5, and I want to to be safe. But I don't want it to be difficult to use. If the protector DOES hamper the touch, can I use the rest of the case without it somehow?

Also, could anyone recommend a case that protects against drops but does not have a screen protector? Really, the only thing I want to protect against is drops. I'm good with screen maintenance, plus the screen is made of gorilla glass, so…

Yeah.

1) Is the screen protector noticeable?
2) Can the box be used effectively without it?
3) And is there another kind of of case I could use instead?

If anyone could answer these questions, I'd be very happy. Thanks.

Added (1). Also, if the screen protector is not hard to use, does it affect how the screen looks? As in the quality of the display? Some protectors dim it down, or make it a little fuzzy. Does this protector do that?

What screen protectors did you use? I'd recommend InvisibleSHIELD from ZAGG (http://www.iphone5casestore.com/469-zagg-iphone-5-cover.htm), I know it's expensive for a screen but it's perfect to secure my prized possession.

I've never used OtterBox, I've been using Case-Mate Barely There for years and just bought it for iPhone 5 (http://www.iphone5casestore.com/564-barely-there.htm). The case is very slim and light and does a nice job of protecting the phone. It's very unobtrusive and wraps around the phone very tightly, like it's part of the phone. Other cases can give a bit when you squeeze or don't quite grip right, but this one is perfect.
