What purpose does iMessages serve on iPhone when you have to be connected to Wi-Fi for it to work?
Simple. It's a totally free Instant Messaging service which can be used to instantly contact any iOS device workdwide.
And no, it does not require Wi-Fi to work, just an active data connection whether GSM or CDMA makes no difference.
IMessage works on any internet connection - be it 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi
It was developed as a way to get around limited number of text messages, charges for international texts and character limitations.
It can also work with iPods and Macs.
It was not the first such service.
IMessage is a legacy app from when carriers didn't give you unlimited SMS messaging. Apple leaves it baked in as default to retain customers.
Not necessarily Wi-Fi. Have to have an internet connection be it Wi-Fi or data. It is like any other instant messaging app. WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, etc.

- Why is my Iphone not sending as Imessages and receiving iMessages from one person? I'm texting my wife and we both have iPhone's and she is getting the messages as an iMessage but the ones I'm sending her on my end show up at green. Sometime it will go as blue, get the little red exclamation point then send as regular SMS. I'm texting someone else too and she has an iPhone, and she is getting mine as regular iMessages and mine are sending as regular iMessages. Why aren't they sending to me wife as iMessages?
- Which one is better for all purpose use? Iphone or ipod? That is for listening music or browsing net or using it as regular cell phone, using it for skype. which one is more updated?
- What's the purpose of an iPhone backup? My iPhone 5 kept telling me that I was low on iCloud space for backup. I followed the directions and ended up deleting the backup. What's the purpose of it anyways? I'm so confused.
