What's the difference between buying an iPhone through a carrier (At&t, virgin mobile, etc.) or Apple?

And why are they sometimes cheaper when you buy it through the carrier? Like, why are iPhones so much cheaper through Virgin Mobile than through other carriers? Is there a difference in quality?

Because they practically have you pay throughout the year(s) for the phone. If you buy it straight from Apple, it'll more than likely be unlocked and work on any carrier you choose and not just one. For example, if you buy it on Verizon or Sprint, you might have a slight problem getting it to work with AT&T and T-Mobile due to them using GSM

If you buy from a carrier, you're basically stuck with that carrier. Verizon uses CDMA and AT&T uses GSM so you can't just take the Verizon SIM card out and put in the AT&T SIM card and expect the phone to work.

If you buy from Apple and get the sim free version, it's pretty much a universal phone. You can stick in any SIM card and expect it to work. Comes in handy when you visit other countries.

The carriers spread the price of the phone over the course of 24 months, vs Apple where you could buy the phone unlocked at 1-time payment of the full price.

Its the same phone anyway you put it.

  • What's the difference between iPhone 4s.5.5s etc? I want to buy an iPhone but only want it for internet browsing, calls and texts. Should I save my money and go for the 4s or pay a lot more for the 5 range? What is the real difference and are they overpriced?
  • What is the difference between buying at Sprint or Apple Store? I'm planning on buying a new iPhone with contract with Sprint. Is there a difference in price or anything? Also, if I buy online vs. In store, will I be able to get discounts with one or the other?
  • Virgin Mobile Canada to virgin mobile USA? So I bought an iPhone 4S that is locked to bell which they say is compatible with virgin mobile Canada carrier, but I'm moving back to United States soon if I unlock it I can use it in united states on the usa Virgin mobile carrier right?
  • It the virgin mobile non-contact iphone 4 worth buying? So I want to get the iphone 4 from target, but I'm not very happy about the price tag ($549.99 + $35 a month with 300 min. With Unlimited messaging and data) That's a *** load of money for one phone, but I like the plan though. Should I get the iphone or get some other non-contract phone from the target store?
