In Germany, one time I left my iPhone in a store, and some professor found it and returned it to me. I guess that perhaps this would not happen in India?
Whichever corner of the planet you walk into, there's a risk of theft. You should bring your belongings at your own risk and be responsible for where you place them. If you are careful enough, I don't see why you should be so worried. :]
