I'd go for the XR.

Bigger display
Better battery life
More support in the long run
Better internals

I would suggest the iPhone 8 plus. The 8 plus costs $699 and has a better camera and is faster than the XR, which costs $749. The 8 plus has a home button, making it easier to use than the XR.

The XR is faster than the older iPhone 8, but the CPU performance of the new 2018 iPhone line with the Bionic A12 chips is only 10% faster than the A11 which is used in the X and 8.

However the GPU on the XR and the rest of the 2018 iPhones has been beefed up to the point it's 40% faster than the 2017 iPhones like the X and 8 Plus. However this would only be useful if you play Mobile Games.

The XR has facial recognition whereas the iPhone 8 has the fingerprint scanner. The facial recognition is one thing I miss about my iPhone X.

The cheaper XR doesn't have an OLED screen so it should be eye friendly, but the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus doesn't have an OLED screen either. I would research this more though to see if there aren't any quirks.

I used to be an avid Samsung Galaxy user but the imperfections of the s6 convinced me to try an iPhone. Originally I bought the X last year but the OLED screen was killing my eyes so I ended up with the iPhone 8 Plus. The battery life on the 8 is better than any Galaxy phone I ever had but Samsung seems to be a little bit better with web surfing and watching videos.

I borrowed an iPhone 6 for a week and a half while I was getting my s6 repaired so I ended up being forced to learn Apple. For whatever reason I had no trouble going from the s6 to the iPhone X. It's a shame the X was hurting my eyes because I was impressed with that phone.

It's hard to ignore the Galaxy s9 and Note 9 because they are loaded with many features. Even though I'm used to Apple, I wouldn t mind trying the Note 9 if I know the OLED screen would be friendly on my eyes. If I was given a choice over the iPhone 8 vs the XR, I would go with the XR hands-down because of the facial recognition and the much better GPU.
