When tuning a guitar do you hold a fret?
When you tune an acoustic guitar do you have to hold a fret down while you tune?
When i tune to drop c or standard do i have to hold any of the frets or do i leave the strings open while i tune?
I have an iphone app tuner if it helps

If you have an app tuner, leave the strings open
Once you have your low E string tuned to E you can hold the fifth fret on low E and pluck E and A together. They should sound the same.
Then move to A and D. The only string that is different is the B string so you hold the G string on the fourth fret G and B should sound the same. Then its back up to fifth fret to tune B and high E.
This is how to tune to standard by ear. Have a buddy pluck their low E and match it with yours and you can tune together this way.

A trick is harmonic tuning. More accurate than standard 5th fret tuning and you don't have to keep any strings fretted while you let the notes ring.
