If you want to choose the Android path: I've heard HTC's and Nexus's are really good, too.
If you want to choose the iPhone path: Do 5s. Since the 5c looks really cheap.
Neither. I like to get older models of smartphones. I don't know it seems that some newer models of popular brands are just the same, but bigger screen.

I have one. It's pretty awesome, a lot larger than the I-phone, more apps etc… It's pretty cool phone. The only thing that's not cool is the price.
