Who pays custom duties (Shipper or Receiver)?
I sold a iPhone to someone in Maldives (some island in who knows where). If I ship it there, will my buyer be the one responsible for the import duty or tariff?
It depends on the process. Sometimes the shipper will pay for the shipping. Sometimes the receiver will pay to the outlet of the package he/she will get in order for the receiver get the package. It depends on your deal with the receiver.
It's always the receiver! International sellers have no way of knowing how much your country is going to charge for import taxes and duties. And even if they did how would a seller (in the USA for example) even know how to pay them to your government?
Also, when the receiver pays they are always paying the exact amount due to the government, not an estimate.
You should consider using a package forwarding company in the US so you can consolidate your orders and save money on shipping and clearance charges!
It depends if you filled out the customs forms and declare it and put a $ value in it. I'm not sure what the limit is, but if it is below the limit, there's no charge.
I have sent packages as gifts to family in other countries and there are no charges.
I have sent packages to my ebay buyers to Europe and just declare my items as gifts, even though the insurance value is over $100 so the receiver don't have to pay anything.
I have bought small items from China, even on their listings they say I will be responsible for customs taxes, but my stuff always arrive in the mail and I don't have to pay anything.
If it from a person to person/ private parties. There's no charges.
It is true that the receiver is the one to pay, but only if the sender is a licensed business not a private personal seller(like ebay).
- Who pays for the chargeback error on paypal? A fraudulent buyer on eBay asked me to ship an iPhone 5 to Indonesia even though that wasn't their verified address. Long story short I shipped phone to Indonesia and the buyer filed a chargeback. Eventually I got the money back from Paypal. Paypal paid for the item. Will paypal contact the buyer for the funds?
