Why can't i upgrade my droid x2?

I've just got this phone on sunday, and i don't have any idea how to do anything on it (went from iphone 4 to droid x2). Its extremely buggy (videos won't play online, apps crash incessantly) and i want to upgrade the software. I currently have 2.3.5 and it would be unbelievable if i couldnt upgrade past it to a newer version of software. I press "system updates" and it responds with "your device is up to date! No update is necessary at this time." so my question is how would i go about actually getting the newer software, if possible.

If the phone says that its up to date, then all that means is that there's no over-the-air update provided by your carrier for the x2. However, since android is open source, there are tons of 3rd party roms (a rom is the mobile operating system) that are available for free to install. Be warned though, this requires a little technical experience. It isn't much, and I was able to do it on my galaxy s3 just from watching you tube videos, but definitely watch the video all the way through BEFORE following along on your phone.

Should you go about doing this, I would recommend cyanogen mod. Its probably the most well known and supported rom. The first thing you are going to want to do is root your phone, and yes, it is required to root before installing a custom rom. Since you're coming from an iPhone, rooting is kinda like jailbreaking, but for android. When you root the phone, make sure you install a custom recovery. It should do it automatically, but make sure it does before selecting your method of rooting. Again, I would just youtube how to do it, its not really that hard to do. After you root it, and have the custom recovery installed, then you can install the custom rom. Before you can install the rom though, you need to have one downloaded on the hard drive of either a computer, so it can be moved to your phone, or directly on the phone's hard drive. The rom should be a zip file. Once its there, youtube how to go into the custom recovery, and install it (not that hard, I promise).

I know this seems like alot, but it shouldn't take you any more than maybe 30 minutes to do all of this. Hope this helps

Also, whatever custom rom you get will obviously be based on a newer version of android than what you have. You can also probably find a rom for stock android if you want. 4.4 is the latest version
