Why is my cord melting?

So my iPhone charging cord split awhile back so I put some electrical tape around it thinking that would be a good idea only to discover a week or 2 later the underneath the cord had melted off what should I do

Maybe you should get another phone and get rid of that one, it could catch on fire

Replace your charging cable…

If the insulation has gone to the point the different conductors in the cable can short together, it start to get hot and/or damage the charger & phone.

It can also get hot if one of the conductors is frayed and has got so thin it can no longer handle the charging current.

Gosh. Any way I could get a picture to see the damage? Depending on what exactly is wrong I may be able to offer a temporary solution, but either way you should really try to get a replacement As soon as possible. That s super dangerous!

It sounds as though not only had the insulation split but you've damaged the wires inside to such an extent that there's only a strand maybe two intact. The higher resistance that would cause means that the cable is heating up when used.

*THE CABLE IS PROBABLY A GENUINE FIRE RISK!

Get a new one…

The cable is melting because you have broken it.Replace the cable AND the wall unit before you start a fire. Handle the replacements with more care, and they will last longer.

You have a short somewhere in the circuit load, find it and fix it.

Take it out of the microwave.

  • Why won't my iphone usb cord work? I have a charger for my iphone, the part that plugs into the wall is separate from the usb cord the cord isn't charging my phone, i know its the cord bc i've tried my friends, but i obviously can't keep them my phone charges in the doc so what do you think i did to my usb cord to make it not work, it just stopped working one day like i don't understand
  • Why is my cord getting chewed up? My iPhone charger is getting chewed up at the part right before where you plug it into the phone at the end. It is a 4S charger. My shih tzu isn't likely to be doing this but it keeps peeling more and more and its certainly not me.
  • Why does my iphone 5 charger cord only work at random times? I bought a $30 10 ft cord from target like 2 weeks ago (i didn't think it would be as bad since it was expensive) and now it has a really weird problem. Sometimes when i plug it into my phone it would work and sometimes it doesn't (it mostly doesn't). I have no idea what the problem is. It isn't the same problem as when i have to bend the cord, its just taking out/putting in the cord.
  • Why can't i find the right aux cord adapter? I'm looking for a female aux to male usb. I have a new computer that has no female aux input. It only has usb and my speakers have a male end aux, one i can plug into my iphone… Is there anyway i can find one? Or does one even exists?
