Why is my ping so high suddenly?

I used to have good internet and i don't know what is going on! Its so frustrating when playing games cuz i have this constant latency which makes me unable to perform well at all.

i used to have 17ms when playing world of warcraft, and no lag when playing call of duty.

But suddenly i have gotten about 80+ ms in wow and EXTREME lag in call of duty.

The thing is it all happened pretty suddenly, and i don't know what the problem is, i tried literally everything, turning off all iphones cause i heard they could make the ping slow, turn off all computers internet, uninstalled all torent programs, even plugged out all homephonesystems just to try and see if it worked, runned virusscanned on all machines in the house. And nothing seems to work.

The really strange thing is my download speed is about 30m/s and my upload is also fine. I really don't get it!

I can't really say without testing, my answer ATM would be that something is causing high latency / ping, and it's not a bandwidth problem which is obvious.xD

What you CAN do to test this to see WHAT is giving you this high latency is a tool called WinMTR:
http://winmtr.net/download-winmtr/

You point this to an IP address (or name too like hotmail.com) and it will repeatedly ping each hop / router on it's way to the destination. If you expect to get like 15ms to the target, and one hop is giving you 70ms, then the rest start adding up to 80ms at the end then it's the 70ms guy that's too blame.

Here's some servers you can try pinging with WinMTR:
http://www.hostedgameservers.com/locations

Choosing a local one sounds like it would be more reliable, if it's really close and you get 100ms that's strange so you know something is up, while if it's like Shanghai, another 100ms might not be a big enough difference to see.

This can help find out who is actually screwing up here, it could be either:
* Your network (if it says your router it probably is but if you have like a switch it could be that)
* Your ISP's network (they have multiple hops)
* The target server's ISP (they have multiple hops too)
* The target server itself

Once you have the IP address of the culprit you can enter it into a site like this:
http://whois.net/ip-address-lookup/

And this will tell you useful information about it.It'll say like Verizon for example if it's inside your ISP. If it's in the 192.168.x.x range then that's your home router.

So because you say it's with both CoD and WoW then it sounds like it's not the server's fault (or their ISP), especially WoW since their stuff don't mess up like that.

If it's your ISP then you should go on their forum or go on like support chat. I wouldn't phone as usually in my experience unless you're on a business plan they're from India and aren't the people you need to speak with to fix a problem like this. They're not network admins.

if it's your router you could try resetting it or buying a new one. This is really good:

Hope this helps,

  • Wi-fi on laptop causing high ping? When the wi-fi is connected on the laptop and i'm watching videos it causes the broadband wired connection on the computer to freeze and shoot the ping to 200+. I have tested other wi-fi devices such as iphone and tablet and it has no impact on the connection, stays at 35-40 ping, it is only when the laptop is connected and watching videos it causes the problem. Any Ideas?

  • Why did the sound suddenly stop working on my iPhone? About a week ago while I was playing music on my phone, the sound just suddenly stopped working. I get no sound when I receive calls, play games, get notifications, etc. When I plug the headphones in, I get sound from them. It's almost as if they are stuck in headphone mode. I haven't gotten my phone wet or dropped it, nothing has been done to damage it. Yet it is without sound. Any ideas on what happen or what I can do to fix it? iPhone 3GS
