Why is the iPhone 6s $649? Usually its $199?

I'm so confused, every time when I buy the iphone its just about 200 dollars, but now I'm checking the iPhone to preorder, and it says its $649! Did they raise the price, or is there something I'm not understanding?

Added (1). For 16gb 6s, not 6plus

In the US (on Apple.com) they always listed the 2 year contract price, which is the $199, 299, 399. The foreign sites since they sell the unlocked version from the start listed the full prices $649, 749, 849.

This time the US is also selling the unlocked version from the start so thats why you are seeing those prices.

You can still order it at those prices if need be or use the installment plan option that the 4 national carriers as well as Apple are offering. I think they raised the price If you preorder a phone, your service company, (Verizon, ATT, TMobile, etc.) will not help you psy for it like they would if your contract was up and you were upgrading Its 199 on contract, not all carriers offer the contract deal The prices you saw previously only applied ifnyounsigned up for cell service with the phone. The higher price is for a completely unlocked phone sold without a contract. Pretty much all the carriers have done away with subsiding phones in exchange for a forced two year contract for allowing you to now pay full price up front for the phone or tablet, or making installment payments for the device, and paying it off in 2 years (24 months) on top of your service plan. This basically it's locking you into a contract if you decide to make payments.

Also if you decide to do installments, you will be asked to get insurance or AppleCare+, and would be a fool not to, unless you have the cash to replace the phone at full retail. It was $199 on a two-year contract (which included the carrier subsidy) and many carriers are getting rid of the two year subscription model in favor of the model that T-Mobile does. I went from being on contract with AT&T to AT&T Next which is a better plan for me, and since Next doesn't have carrier subsidies you pay full price for the device in installments on top of your normal bill and own the device. Every time a company markets a new product, they take advantage of the consumer market by raising the price extremely high. Once nobody wants this phone any more, than it is safe for them to lower the price. Buy it later that's what I always do it will be just as effective. Well the new thing with these carrier's now is to have you pay for it in monthly payments (The Phone itself). They all pretty much screw you over now. The worse part is you don't get to keep the phone if you upgrade to a newer one. But if you really want to keep it just buy it unlocked for $649. You can take it anywhere you like.
