Why is there no iPhone 9 or Windows 9? Is it a bad number or something?

In Japan the number 9 is considered unlucky, and the Japanese take this very seriously. They obviously are a huge market - so it would be a bad selling point to use 9. It's similar to car names - there have been several gaffes in the past where cars have been given exotic names, only for them to be very bad language in some of the countries they are sold too. Basically there's a lot more research done nowadays to the mass global market.

By the convention Apple established over the last few years, this years model should have been the iPhone 7s. And that is exactly what we got but Apple decided to ditch the old naming conventions and called it the iPhone 8.

But since the iPhone 5s there have only been relatively minor changes to iPhone functionality, and as this year marked the tenth year of production Apple wanted to mark it by releasing a model very different to what went before. So they made the iPhone X (iPhone Ten).

The name was totally appropriate for the occasion, and also conveniently avoided the number 9 because in Japan that is considered to be an omen of death to the extent that when I stayed in Tokyo many years ago, my hotel lift didn't show a ninth floor, and neither did the office I was working in. The Chinese are even worse for that: tower blocks often lack any 4th, 13th and 14th floor, and the office block I worked in went straight from floor 39 to floor 50.

The iPhone X is to mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. There was no iPhone 2 either.

No Windows 9 because it might be confused with Windows 9x.

IPhone 9 - its possible there could still be one, but we wouldn't know until September 2018. The 8 followed the 7 & the X is named for the 10th anniversary iPhone not as 10 the model number.

Windows 9 - Microsoft skipped 9 to look better against macOS 10 (OS X at the time) instead of releasing Windows 9 vs macOS 10.

Samsung did something similar with their Galaxy Note line by skipping 6 to 7 (vs the iPhone 7).

The iPhone X is named as such to mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. The iPhone's naming conventions have always been kind of weird, since the next phone after the original iPhone was the iPhone 3G, which wasn't the third iPhone, it was the 3G because it supported 3G data networks.

Windows 10 was named such to avoid programming issues as some programs were reading Windows 9 as Windows 95 or 98.

  • Why is my iPhone number being displayed wrongly on my number? My number is X, but on "my number" settings, it's being displayed number Y. Why is that? Also, some people told me that when I call or text them, the number Y is appearing to them, not the number X as it should. On the other hand, if I call the number X, my iPhone rings normally, but the same thing doesn't happen when I call number Y.
  • Why is mobile sending number different to my number? I recently bought an Iphone and did a sim swap so I could keep my phone number. Everything has been ok. However, when I send an imessage it shows the recipient a different number to mine. I don't think this happens when I send a SMS. Presumably it's the original number for the new sim? Why is this?
  • Regarding sending something back with a warranty and returning something broken to a seller on amazon? I ordered a charger for my iPhone and it comes with a 18 month worry free warranty and my charger broke. So I was wondering can I return it to the seller in a envelope in my mailbox and same thing for the other thing that is broken. like or do I have to go to ups and ship it like that
  • Is there something wrong with my phone or is there something wrong with my mom's phone? Ok so when I attempt to call my mom, it doesn't ring it just goes straight to voicemail but doesn't show on my mom's phone that she had a missed called. My messages won't go through either, but her calls and messages come through to me. We both have iPhones and they are both on. I can text everyone else, call everyone else but her.
