Why isn't my iPhone 4 not updating to IOS 6?

Try updating it but it keeps saying that it can't! Why?

Try Updating it from the phone, under settings>general. If that dosent work, go into iTunes and update it manually from there. If that dosent work, then try backing up your iPhone, wiping it, then restoring it from your Back Up

Currently I'm using the iPhone 5s on iOS 8.3 I know if I were to update my phone to the latest OS I may notice some slowdown on my phone's performance, since it may not have the "muscle" to handle certain functions. Many apps now are optimised for iOS 9 and/or the 6th generation phones. Will my 5s' speed performance slow down if I update my apps? Will the app's performance slow down?

I've been trying to perform a software update on my iPhone 5s by going into the phone's settings and then general and clicking software update, but every time I do this it just says "checking for updates" but it's not letting me update. I left it checking for an update for about 15 minutes and still nothing. I'm currently running IOS 7.0.4
