You have to use iTunes.
You don't need iTunes. Go to Settings->General->Software Update.
Probably your current iPhone software version is bellow 5.0
Connect to iTunes, update and after that you will have "update option"
Open iTunes, download iOS 6 from here: http://www.idownloadblog.com/iphone-downloads/
Then hold down Shift and hit restore. Locate where you downloaded iOS 6/6.0.1 and select the iOS 6.ipsw file. Then press open and let iTunes update your iPhone
