Why port forwarding on port 80?

I have a foscam home security camera and it needs port forwarding on port 80 if I want to use my iphone to view it from outside. Surely enough, it works as soon as I open that port. But isn't port 80 open by default? Else how could I view http websites in the first place. I don't get it. It's already open so why open it again?

Very simply network connections (well, the ones that you're using) are directional. So from your PC on the "inside" of you network, all ports including 80 are (almost certainly) open to everywhere on the "outside". But this doesn't match port 80 *from* the "outside" to the "inside", so these connections are dropped.

There's more to it that this, but it's a good starting point. (Read up on TCP-based network connections and NAT if you want an "interesting" read.)

All ports are open "outgoing", from your PC to the Internet. By default, all ports are closed "incoming" from the Internet through the router (router by default blocks all incoming ports unless a PC application has it open already)

So, port 80 incoming is never open unless you open it.

  • Why does my 2010 car not have an aux port? I have a 2010 Chevrolet Colorado truck. It doesn't have an auxiliary port to plug my iPhone into, and it frustrates me because I hate having to make CDs.
  • Trouble with 2013 Scion tC USB port? (I have the stock audio system) Every time I plug my iPhone (4) into the usb port to play my music or charge it, nothing happens. I pressed the button on the radio that says iPod/Mp3 but it shows that nothing is connected. How do I get it to work?
  • Text message forwarding option not available? I'm trying to sync my mac and my iphone together so that i can get messages on both, but the text message forwarding isn't available on my iphone. They're both completely up to date, and they're both signed in to the same icloud account. I don't understand why i can't sync them up.
  • Should the iPhone lifeproof case bottom port be a little loose? I feel like it isn't as secure as it should be and when I submerge the phone and take it out of the water it seems as I though a little tiny drops of water got on to the yellow guard? Also I can push on the bottom port and it goes up but then returns to origanal postion? Normal?
