Why won't my old iphone turn on?

Its a 3gs. I haven't used it in over a year but today i tried to charge it and turn it back on and it won't. A picture of a battery with a lightning bolt pops up while i'm charging it. I want to turn it on and use it again.

Just have to charge it till it charges. Or maybe it's dead. You haven't used it in a year? Wow

Plug it in and just wait… It should start up eventually.
