Will an Apple Store unlock an iPhone for me?

I have recently considered purchasing a used unlocked iPhone online; however, the description online does not make it clear whether of not the phone is truly unlocked. If it isn't, would I be able to take it to an Apple Store to get it unlocked?

Furthermore, once it is unlocked, would I be able to set it up for Virgin Mobile (they do carry the iPhone 4S now)?

The iPhones advertised on Apple's online store ARE truly unlocked, because you buy them without any service or carrier. They will work on any GSM carrier (i.e.one that uses SIM cards).

But if your iPhone isn't unlocked yet, it's doubtful an Apple store would unlock it for you. That's because a) Verizon and Sprint iPhones can't be unlocked because they're CDMA not GSM, and b) although AT&T iPhones *can* be unlocked, they have many restrictions on how and when you can unlock (so you'll probably need to have AT&T do it if it's doable at all).

But you can't set up an unlocked iPhone on Virgin Mobile, because they are a CDMA carrier; they don't offer SIM cards (I checked by doing a chat on their website with a customer service rep).

No they will not unlock it.

  • Where is the best place to buy an iPhone 4s: the Verizon store or the Apple store? I don't have an upgrade until January but am looking to buy an iPhone soon. I've been looking at the various sites and saw that there was a huge price difference between the Apple and Verizon stores. A rep at the Verizon store told me I wouldn't even have to change my existing plan, but just pay the $449 for the phone. Why would I buy an iPhone 4s from Verizon for $449.99 when they're sold on the Apple website for $99?
  • Verizon store or apple store for a new iphone 5? Verizon said I can get an Iphone 5 for "Using my upgrade + $199).Is it true that I can get an iphone 5 at the apple store for $199? If true, Why would I use an upgrade at verizon and pay the same amount for the phone?
  • Should I buy my iPhone at the Apple Store or the Verizon store? The plans and the phones themselves cost the exact same; the difference is the care plan. I just can't decide which one is best for me and I definitely want some sort of plan. Apple care is an upfront cost, but it is cheaper. I don't know how long either last, or which one takes care of the customers the best. Any opinions?
  • Is it better to buy the iphone from the apple store or from verzion store? I'm thinking to of getting the Iphone but i go on the apple website and they make it sound cheaper. Then i go to the verizon website and they make it sound more expensive. Which one should i go with?
