Will ios 7 for the iphone 5 be mandatory?

I heard the ios 7 is coming out in the fall but I hate the look of it; that was one of the major reasons why I got my iphone. I love how it is now and I don't want to be forced to change back to exactly what I was trying to escape. Will there be any way I can still keep ios 6 and just never update my phone? Or will I have to eventually?

You definitely could I stayed on 5 because of jailbreak on my 4s and haven't experienced any problems yet.

The update shouldn't be mandatory, but eventually you will have to update it to use certain apps.

The update to iOS 7 is unlikely to be mandatory to existing iOS users, as per the case with previous releases.
Although, often third-party app developers will be introduce certain updates which will only be supported by the latest firmware, which will in turn, be required to update your iOS in order to use these apps.
