Will My IPhone Work in South Africa?

I have an I Phone 4 and I'm going to South Africa for two weeks. I want to text to my family and friends and occasionally make a call. My local AT&T store says my phone will work fine but they suggest a special program to permit more texting and calling at a cheaper rate but no internal modifications to the phone are needed. Want to make sure this is correct. Anyone traveled to SA with an IPhone?

All the mobile networks (MTN, Vodacom and CellC) are fully 3G compliant and moving towards 4G. All handsets work in SA as they are a tri band network service, meaning 900, 1800 and 1900 rated phones work there.

The cheapest data plans are available from CellC, followed my MTN and then Vodacom. Rechrage vouchers can be purchased from most stores, even street vendors. I would advise you to visit a CellC store and have a customer service agent guide you properly on the loading of prepaid cards to ensure you don't load it to the incorrect "platform" as once a card is loaded, it is "locked in on the platform" and not transfereable between platforms. Also you can't request for a refund as the card is now deemed as "used".

Don't let it scare you, the networks are easy to understand and a pretty straight forward IVR system is in place to guide you through everything should you forget what the Custmer service agane thas told you.

Yes it will work. You just need to get the micro sim from one of our operators (MTN, Vodacom or Cell C) and your phone would work as normal. We have 3G, Lte will be rolling out in the next two months.fairly good coverage on MTN and Vodacom. Cell C not so much

Um South Africa is not that behind on technology you know, you make it sound like South Africa doesn't know what Iphones are and weather it will work or not is not Iphone related its network related.

I have had 3 iphones and 2 ipads and never did they not work cus its South Africa:-)
