Will an American iPhone work in south Africa?

I'm going to go to America for a while. I plan on buying a iPhone from there. So I just wanted to know that when I come back to SA, will it still work

Well of course it will WORK but your data bill will sky rocket if you don't have data roaming.

The best is to go to your nearest cellphone shop here in SA and ask for advice. Also, do the same at the shop in the USA you will be buying from. Tell them you are planning on using it in SA.
