Will my Verizon iPhone 4s work in Canada? - 1
I'm traveling to Montreal in a couple days for vacation and will be gone for 10 days. I live on the east coast and I believe the same time zone as Montreal. Will there be roaming charges? I won't be making any phone calls just sending texts if that makes a difference. I use Verizon and have an iPhone 4s.
Call Verizon to make sure it has not been restricted to the USA. They will be able to tell you how much it will cost.
Should it work? Yes. Unless you have a phone that is somehow restricted to using Verizon's network.
Will you get roaming charges? Yes. Almost definitely. Unless you have some sort of deal with Verizon, which I seriously doubt they would agree to.
Montreal has a few different mobile networks. The big three are Bell Mobility, Rogers, and Telus. When your Verizon iPhone4 crosses the border into Canada, you should see it change from saying VERIZON at the top to one of these three networks.
As soon as that happens, you will likely be paying roaming fees. So to avoid surprises, I'd suggest you set the phone to airplane mode, or set the Cellular Data and/or Data Roaming to OFF. Your phone should still work up here, you would just go to any Wi-Fi hotspot (most coffee shops and McDonald's offer this) and you should be able to text, surf the web, and send or receive emails.
If you need to make phone calls and don't want the roaming charges, consider installing the Skype app and use that over Wi-Fi instead of making regular calls which will get roaming fees and long distance charges.
