It's not compulsory. You can unlock it using a six-digit PIN as well, and when facial recognition fails (and I strongly suspect that will be more often than with fingerprint scanning) you will be prompted to use the PIN instead.
Just as with all fingerprint-scanning iPhones, you can set the iPhone X by default to use just the PIN unlock alone.
But if you absolutely don't want to use facial recognition then you may as well buy an iPhone 8 instead as it offers most of the same user experience at lower cost.
You don't have to, but it would be the most convenient way to unlock your phone.
