Added (1). I was letting it charge while taking a bath. In the middle of a text, it started making sizzling noises and could swear I saw smoke. I banged it on the edge of the tub a few times and it seemed to be okay. Any idea if this is safe?

There have been problems as is evidenced by many videos out there. Still, the odds of you having a problem with yours is very slim.
Just don't leave it on charge while it is unattended until you can find out for certain. Also, there have been incidences of them failing catastrophically while turned off and in you pocket. Maybe you should just remove the battery when not in use.
Okay, that seems a bit inconvenient so if you do not already own one, don't buy one until the issues are resolved.
