Can i Use same handset after moving to Australia?

I'm moveing to Perth, australia on a VISA beginning of September 2015.

I currently have a pay monthly phone contract with O2 which expires end of October 2015.

I've heard that i can unblock my phone, get a new australian sim card and then carry on using my phone in australia, basically i just don't want to have to lose all of my numbers etc.

Do you think it would be easier to just cancel my current UK contract in october and take out a brand new australian contract once i'm there? (possibly just use an australian sim card if i unblok my phone, payments would be cheaper too )!

But then again my iphone is probably reaching its shelf date by now!

Thanks everyone

Added (1). ALSO, IS THERE A Way FOR ME TO JUST GET A NEW AUSTRALIAN CONTRACT, AND TO DIVERT CALLS AND TEXTS FROM MY ENGLISH NUMBER TO THE NEW PHONE?

Yes you can, it doesn't matter

  • Moving to Germany from USA to live for at least 3 years to study. How can I still use my phone to text/call/FT Americans while I'm there? Do I need to get a completely new phone? Plan? Phone number? I don't understand this process, as I have never gone through it before. I currently have an IPhone 7 and I use AT&T.
  • Is an iPhone handset cost included on the pay monthly cost? I'm thinking of buying an iphone and comparing prices on http://www.omio.com/phones/apple/iphone-5s-32gb/deals will the handset cost be included on the pay monthly or will I have to pay for the handset cost as well as pay monthly?
  • How to use an iphone from Australia in New Zealand? I have an iPhone 3gs 8gb from Australia (cos that's obviously where I live) and I'm going on a holiday to New Zealand in a few weeks, I was just wondering what I have to do to be able to use my iPhone in New Zealand? I was looking at phone companies and I noticed that Vodaphone runs in New Zealand and if I take out my Virgin Mobile Australia sim card and put in the Vodaphone NZ sim card, will it work like normal if I buy credit?
  • How to save all my data to the handset rather than the SIM? I'm changing my O2 SIM card to a giffgaff SIM card and I was told to make sure to save all data and contacts to the phone so when I change SIM cards I don't lose anything. I have an iPhone 4. How do I do this? I'd appreciate any tips or step by steps for things to consider when you're changing SIM cards in the same phone and keeping the same number. Any help would be really useful!
