Only if after plugging them in you yank on them to break them. I use my iPod earbuds in the 3.5mm headphone jack on my Sony camcorders, HP laptop, iMac, iPad, portable DVD player… The mic won't work, but the audio to your ears will be fine.

No. They will work fine. You just won't get all the features from the buttons on the mic. (like volume up/down, and play/pause)
No. Caoedhen has no clue what he / she is talking about. I wire things for a living and there's only way to wire a headphone jack. There are only three wires going to one for cripes sake. I love it when people with no technical knowledge, skills or experience talk about technical things.
The only thing that could keep one from using a set of ear buds / phones would be an impedance mismatch.
