Can you completely turn off the sound on an iPhone 5?

So I just got an iPhone 5 yesterday. I know how to mute the ringer, but if I want to play a game during school I don't want the sound to be on. Is there a way to mute apps? And I don't want to do any jailbreaks or things like that

Seriously, try using the same volume button when the app is running. On my iPhone 3gS, if you don't have something running, volume changes ringer, but if you launch an app, you can control sound volume *non-ringer* with the same control.

Yes, the same switch for the ringer disables in app sounds.

  • Turn off iPhone 5s completely when abroad? I'm going to Argentina for 3 weeks and I'm taking my iPhone 5s but I plan on turning it completely off. I've read so many horror stories about charges on your bill. I initially planned on turning the roaming off or whatever, but I'm not sure how all that works, so if I turn it off completely will everything be okay? Or do I have to do anything else like remove the sim card.

When I press the buttons to lower my volume it goes down but one little square stays and won't go down and it's really disturbing because when I'm in class I get a message and my phone rings and I can't do anything about it.
